Friends of Leeds Baroque

The Friends of Leeds Baroque (Registered Charity No. 1099251) provides financial and practical support to the choir and orchestra in their aim of providing an opportunity for local audiences to share in the musicians’ enthusiasm for baroque music by giving professional, non-professional and student players in our area experience of playing the baroque choral and orchestral repertory at a high level of performance practice and scholarship and with some of the country’s leading exponents of early music.

The Friends are one of the Leeds Baroque’s major sources of funding and give that vital boost to our income, ensuring we maintain and develop our acclaimed standards. In pursuit of this the Friends recently purchased a chamber organ for the use of the choir. At present the Friends' major fundraising project is the Leeds Baroque Instrument Fund which has recently been able to fund the purchase of a baroque viola (with support from Leeds Philosophical and Literary Society) and is now seeking to raise money to support the purchase of a baroque violin for use by student members of the orchestra.

Practically, the Friends help with the organisation and promotion of the concerts and coordinate the provision of accommodation and transport for orchestral and choir members and guest soloists from outside Leeds over concert weekends. From time to time we provide “box office” facilities and refreshments for self-promoted concerts.

Friends benefits include:
  • E- programme in advance for Friends and Patrons
  • Reserved seating (where practical)
  • Regular newsletters (with advance information, news, interviews and notes)
  • Special Friends only events and arrangements (including a summer garden party and open rehearsals)

Membership is by annual subscription:
  • Individual membership £15
  • Joint membership (2 people) £25
  • Young people (under 26 and full time students) £10
  • Patrons: Annual Donations over £50

The Social Event of the Season!
Friends of Leeds Baroque met for afternoon tea (and some horticultural advice as required!) at the Friends Garden Party on Sunday 17th June 2018 . In addition to a brief buisness meeting Friends and their guests enjoyed a glass of wine and an excellent afternoon tea. A plant sale and donations raised £135 for the Friends funds.

With a little help from our Friends ...

One of the Friends major contributions to Leeds Baroque has been the establishment of the “Fiddle Fund” not entirely restricted to the purchase of fiddles – but it has enabled the orchestra to purchase of two baroque violins, a Baroque viola and most recently a baroque cello  for use by up-and-coming young players without their own baroque instrument.
